EVENT HISTORY
The opening round of the 2018 Porsche Wilson Security Carrera Cup Australia will be the 107th round held in the history of the series since it began in 2003.The Adelaide round will feature races number 315, 316 and 317 in series history. This year is the 12th time the Carrera Cup has competed in Adelaide since it first appeared at the former Grand Prix venue in 2004. Every time it has been the opening round of the series.
Six different drivers have won the last six Carrera Cup rounds in Adelaide. Nick McBride (2016 winner) is the only one of these pilots in the 2018 field. The Adelaide round winner has gone on to win the Carrera Cup series that season five times in total, however it’s happened only once since the category was re-introduced in 2011 following a two-year hiatus. The drivers to achieve this were Alex Davison (2004), Fabian Coulthard (2005) and Craig Baird (2006, 2008, 2013).Alex Davison is the only repeat pole-sitter in Carrera Cup history in Adelaide.
Nick McBride is the only driver to win a Carrera Cup round in Adelaide without winning a race on that weekend. He achieved this in 2016, just the fifth time where this has occurred in the history of the series. The only time this has happened since was 2017 at Phillip Island won by David Wall and Shane Smollen. The field of 26 cars for the opening round of 2018 is the biggest seen in the series since way back in the inaugural 2003 season on the Gold Coast, when 26 cars lined up and competed in the first race of that weekend.
GAPS AND MARGINS
The closest Carrera Cup finish in Adelaide came in the first race last year when Andre Heimgartner held off David Wall by 0.1594-seconds.
Adelaide is the site of the second biggest win in Carrera Cup history in 2012 when Alex Davison beat Nick Foster by 12.0693s in Race 1. At the time it was a record, though it was beaten later in the season by Jonny Reid’s 13.7760s win over Davison at Phillip Island that May.
The smallest pole position margin for a round in Adelaide is 0.0090s between pole man Craig Baird and David Reynolds in 2007. It is the fourth closest in Carrera Cup history.
The biggest pole margin in Adelaide in Carrera Cup came last year – Andre Heimgartner beat Sonic Motor Racing teammate Nick McBride to pole position by 0.3419-seconds.
DRIVER MILESTONES
Max Twigg will make his 50th Carrera Cup round start in Adelaide. He becomes just the fifth man in series history (after Marc Cini, Craig Baird, Rodney Jane and Alex Davison) to achieve this milestone. Stephen Grove will start his 44th Carrera Cup round in Adelaide and surpass Tony Quinn to move to 10th on the all-time round starts list in series history.
Reigning Carrera Cup Champion David Wall will move to ninth on the all-time race starts list in series history in Adelaide, provided he starts all three races. If he does he will have started 125 races, meaning only eight drivers will have started more races than him in series history.
NEW AND RETURNING FACES
Six drivers will make their Carrera Cup debut in the 2018 season-opener in Adelaide – Josh Hunt, John Steffensen, Cameron Hill, Peter Major, Leanne Tander and Adam Garwood. The third of them to drive out onto the circuit in opening practice will officially be the 200th driver to compete in series history.
Four other drivers are making their first solo start in the Carrera Cup having previously competed as co-drivers at Pro-Am rounds. They are Anthony Gilbertson, Adrian Flack, Indiran Padayachee and Dale Wood. James Moffat will make his first Carrera Cup round start in nearly 10 years. He last competed in the series in the final round of 2008 on the Gold Coast and won the round overall.
Greg Taylor will make his first start in the series since the Gold Coast in 2014. Roger Lago makes his first start in the series since 2016 at Sydney Motorsport Park and his first solo round start in the series since he was injured in a qualifying accident in Townsville in 2015.
There are 13 Pro drivers and 13 TAG Heuer Pro-Am drivers in the Adelaide field.
